Granite Northwest and Other AGC Volunteers Create Trout Stream Exhibit

A resident population of cutthroat trout will have a new home thanks to Granite Northwest Inc. and several other AGC members who worked with the Adopt A Stream Foundation (AASF) to create a Trout Stream Exhibit at the Northwest Stream Center (NWSC) located in Snohomish Countys McCollum Park.

During January and February trout spawning and rearing habitat was installed as part of the finishing touches completing the exhibit and in March stream side vegetation will be planted along the new channel.

The AASF is very grateful and humbled by the overwhelmingly positive support for the development of the Trout Stream Exhibit said Foundation Director Tom Murdoch. Granite Northwest donated its services to become the general contractor and all of the Trout Stream Exhibit partners have been instrumental to its success. All partners are listed below.

Tom Zamzow whose kids helped AASF plant trees next to North Creek linked the Foundation with AGC. Zamzow and the AGCs Seattle District Manager Jerry Dinndorf made calls for help as did AASF staff and volunteer board members. Zamzow is Northwest Washington Branch Manager for Granite Northwest Inc. and First Vice President for AGC.

That Trout Stream Exhibit is the first major attraction at the NWSC the lone environmental learning center in the Pacific Northwest with stream and wetland ecology & fish and wildlife habitat restoration as its central themes. Development of this site resulted from a strong partnership between the AASF and Snohomish Countys Parks and Recreation Department. The department leased a 20 acre site to AASF in McCollum Park adjacent to North Creek a salmon and trout stream that flows from South Everett through Mill Creek and Bothell to the Sammamish River and Lake Washington.

A Visitors Building was completed last year. Major structural features of the Trout Stream Exhibit were completed in February. A mile of raised boardwalks that will lead visitors through 19-acres of complex wetlands and forests next to North Creek and a forest canopy viewing tower that will enable visitors to see life in the tree canopy are on the drawing boards awaiting sponsors.

One major goal is to create an environment in the stream that will be suitable for a self-sustaining trout population said Murdoch. In order for that to happen the new stream must have high oxygen levels and habitat for an abundant and diverse population of underwater insects...food for trout. Another goal is to create a place where up to 45000 people a year can learn about stream ecology.

The newest stream in Washington State is 160 feet long. When the water begins to flow in a few weeks it will cascade over boulders in the headwaters into a deep pool and then into a trout spawning area and downstream into a pond that was restored from a parking lot that used to be wetlands. There are viewing windows next to the pool and spawning habitats.

Building the Trout Stream Exhibit has been akin to a very slow Amish Barn Building project where the entire community gets involved said Murdoch.
