Seattle Seeks Candidates for Construction-Codes Advisory Board

Mayor Mike McGinn invites applicants to fill three openings on the Construction-Codes Advisory Board. These new members will fill positions representing three different professions:
- Organized labor
- General contractors and
- Apartment-building owners or operators
The Construction-Code Advisory Board advises the Department of Planning and Development. The work involves reviewing codes that affect the design and construction of buildings and the City’s built environment. The Department relies heavily on the Board’s advice as do the city’s elected officials. The Board’s volunteers are appointed by Mayor McGinn and confirmed by the City Council.
The term for the organized labor representative is a three-year term that ends in June 2016. The other two positions fill partial terms that end in June 2015. Full terms are three years and are renewable.
Board members review and comment on code amendments and Directors Rules. The Board’s work spans the building residential energy mechanical and electrical codes. Board members also sometimes review challenges to decisions that the department makes related to these codes.
The work requires careful attention to details of technical matters. Board members contribute based on their professional experience and point of view. Critical thinking is valued. Preparing for and attending meetings averages about 2-6 hours a month. Meetings take place in downtown Seattle at noon. All Board members reserve time to attend meetings on the first and third Thursdays of each month. The actual frequency of meetings depends on workload; some months include one or no meetings.
Applicants must live work or do business in Seattle. Employees of the City of Seattle are not eligible.
