CWU, WSU, UW Students Take Honors at ASC Competition
Congratulations to construction management students from Central Washington University University of Washington and Washington State University who won awards at the 2013 Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) Competition Region 7 in Sparks Nevada. The AGC of Washington Education Foundation provided grants to each schools program to help fund the students participation in the competition.
Winning teams included:
Washington State University
The WSU Commercial team coached by Professor Jason Peschel won first place in the Commercial category for Region 7. Students had less than 24 hours to develop a proposal for a real-life construction problem that they received from the industry sponsor Hensel Phelps Construction Co. In their proposal the students had to use a variety of construction management skills such as scheduling es
timating site logistics site safety and technical writing. The proposals were then supplemented by a formal presentation the following day which was followed by a question and answer session. This is the second time in recent years that the Commercial team has placed at the competition earning second place in 2012. According to the judges this year’s Commercial team was “absolutely dominant” and was the “stand-out winner by a wide margin”.

In a competition against 9 other teams the WSU Design-Build team coached by Professor Dr. David Gunderson took third place in the Design-Build category for Region 7.
For the design-build category sponsored by Swinerton Incorporated the students are provided with a brief program for the project from which they are to develop a schematic design estimate schedule and perform an evaluation of how the project will be managed from design through construction. Their work is also supplemented by a formal presentation and is completed in less than 24 hours. This is the third time in recent years that the Design-Build team has placed in the competition earning third place in 2012 and first place in 2011.

Central Washington University
The CWU Heavy Civil Team with Faculty Coach P. Warren Plugge took third place in its 
category. The project incorporated the construction skills of estimating planning and scheduling a competitive bid presented to the industry sponsor (Granite Construction) as a simulated pre-bid review. The competition required students to put together a bid in sixteen hours as a live bid scenario then present their bid in a bid review in front of company executives. As part of their preparation students work closely with their coach and industry sponsors to hone their construction skills in estimating planning scheduling and public speaking. Success at the competition would not be possible without the dedication of our industry sponsors KNIK Construction Granite Construction Active Construcion Inc.and Gary Merlino Construction who provide critical feed back to the students.

University of Washington
The UW Mixed Use Team coached by Professor John Schaufelberger won first place in 
the Mixed Use category in Region 7. Students had four hours in which to develop a proposal for the construction of 12 new villas located within an existing 80-year old Hotel Bel-Air in Los Angeles. Their proposal included a pre-construction services estimate a fee proposal project overhead estimate a summary construction schedule and a description of their approach to executing the project. Once the proposal had been submitted the students had 12 hours in which to address a variety of challenges and issues that occurred during the construction of the project. Finally they participated in an Operations Project Review to present their recommendations to upper management of their construction company.

In a competition against 10 other teams the UW Sustainable Building and LEED Team 
coached by Professor John Schaufelberger won third place. Students had 16 hours in which to analyze a $32 million 8-story building to analyze and develop LEED certification credits and components of the Living Building program. They were asked to evaluate indoor air quality management the roof reuse of construction materials alternative transportation and on-site renewal energy and submit written proposals as well as defend their recommendations in a formal presentation.
