STP Series Revised to Meet Students' Needs

AGCs Supervisory Training Program known popularly as STP is a nationally recognized training standard that for many years has been the professional development resource of choice for construction supervisors and managers

Now area contractors can improve the supervisory skills of their personnel through an updated and streamlined STP developed by the AGC of Washington Education Foundation in cooperation with AGC of America. The first unit of the improved STP begins September 10 in Seattle and pre-registration is now available by contacting Mick Newell 206.284.4500.

After we reviewed the STP series of classes with instructors former students employers and others AGC of America agreed to try out this new format said Mick Newell the Education Foundations marketing coordinator.

Newell says the biggest change to the series is the reduced number of classes students have to attend to complete the series.

STP consists of ten units on topics such as leadership and motivation contract documents and construction law and productivity improvement. Traditionally students attend six classes for each unit. With the Education Foundations updated program students attend four per unit.

Recently there has been a drop off in the number of STP registrants said Newell. Our course evaluations and discussions with students showed that the amount of classroom time required for each unit was a barrier to completion of the program. Through the innovation of our instructors weve been able to significantly reduce classroom time without eliminating any of the content.

Another change that will improve students experience is a reduction in the number of instructors. Normally there are ten STP instructors one per unit said Newell. That makes communication and interaction among the instructors difficult. With this new series beginning in September we will have three instructors teaching the ten units with improved communication among instructors and a more streamlined set of courses for students.

Newell added that the instruction will involve more of a case-study approach than in previous STP courses.

We think these changes improve STP which remains a construction-specific training curriculum developed updated and field tested by and for contractors said Newell.

Pre-registration is now available by contacting Mick Newell 206.284.4500.
