2012 Excellence in Partnering Awards

Named for AGC of America’s 1991 President Marvin M. Black – an ardent supporter of the partnering process – the Liberty Mutual Marvin M. Black Excellence in Partnering Awards are presented annually to construction projects that epitomize the principles of partnering and the successful collaborations that work to improve construction projects.

Approaching its third decade the Marvin M. Black Excellence in Partnering Awards celebrate successful partnerships and years of outstanding results from such collaborations. Since 1992 the AGC member firms in good standing that have received this prestigious award stand out for their proficiency in the following areas: achieving a common goal honoring all stakeholders resolving conflict improving communication on the project with all audiences celebrating joint successes incorporating team-building activities and most importantly perpetuating the partnering process.

 

RECOGNITION WINNERS

US 60 at Vicksburg Road Roundabout Vicksburg Arizona

Combs Construction Company Inc.

In collaboration with the Arizona Department of Transportation and La Paz County the high volume four-way intersection at US 60 and Vicksburg Road was transformed into a safe energy efficient roundabout. This $1.4 million project enhanced approximately 700 feet of roadway along each leg of the intersection. Completed three months ahead of schedule this project included grading drainage asphalt paving concrete paving curb and gutter signing and pavement marking lighting and erosion control. With a rephased schedule that reduced project costs and increased savings Combs Construction Company used brief closures of Vicksburg Road and one-lane sections of US 60 eliminating a temporary detour. Combined with 24-hour flagging this partnered approach and communication minimized impact to the community and reduced material costs.

 

Aurora Prairie Waters Peter D. Binney Water Purification Facility City of Aurora Colorado

Western Summit Constructors Inc.

The City of Aurora needed a more reliable sustainable water supply for its community. This $193 million project featured pipelines pump stations a finished water reservoir well fields raw water storage and the Peter D. Binney Water Purification Facility holding 50 million gallons a day. The Binney Facility included softening the largest ultraviolet/advanced oxidation process in North America flocculation and sedimentation GAC filtration and GAC absorption and finished and recycled water pumping. The facility increased Aurora’s water supply by 20 percent and delivered 3.3 billion gallons of water per year. The broad based partnering collaborative completed the facility early and under budget.

 

NGA Campus East Fort Belvoir Virginia

Clark/Balfour Beatty A Joint Venture

The 2.4 million square feet campus was the largest U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) military construction project since the Pentagon in 1943. This $1.4 billion project served as the home for the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) and provided geospatial intelligence to support national security. The centerpiece was a 2.2 million-square-foot eight-story main office building that consisted of highly complex IT and security systems. Additional features of the campus included a technology center utility plant visitor center and parking garage. The united team of ten partners realized their goal of uncompromised national security through expedited phased delivery of secure spaces for immediate mission use six months ahead of schedule and on budget. This was the largest federal project ever registered with the U.S. Green Building Council as a LEED Gold certified building.
