Young and Kittle Named Project Manager and Superintendent of Year
Both the Project Manager of the Year and the Superintendent of the Year work for Kiewit Infrastructure West and both helped lead the award-winning SR 519 project. Frank Young and Ed Kittle were honored as part of the AGC of Washington Build Washington Awards.
Project Manager of the Year: Frank Young Kiewit Infrastructure West Co.
As project manager on Kiewit’s SR 519 project Frank Young’s leadership instilled a strong commitment to excellence within his team.
With an aggressive schedule for both design and construction Kiewit proposed a completion date 15 months earlier than the owner’s anticipated date. Under Frank’s leadership the job met this goal. In addition Frank’s team completed the project on budget implemented several innovative techniques and compiled an excellent safety record.
His focus on safety quality of work owner relations and people-development earned Frank and Kiewit accolades from the owner and stakeholders. Following completion of the SR-519 project Kiewit received letters of commendation from the Seattle Department of Transportation Sound Transit and WSDOT.
The WSDOT management team and our many stakeholders consider the SR-519 project an outstanding achievement for the State the City and all involved” said David Sowers P.E. WSDOT Engineering Manager. And Seattle DOT’s Construction Project Engineer Katherine Claeys said “I believe the attention to quality while maintaining cost control and adhering to the project schedule has made this highly visible project an exceptional achievement.”
A stellar safety record was a highlight of Frank’s SR 519 project. “Kiewit managers fully understand and expect nothing less than 100 percent success in safety” said Kiewit’s Area Sponsor Erik Nelson. “The responsibility to carry out our commitment that ‘Nobody Gets Hurt’ is taken very seriously by Frank Young. As project manager for the SR-519 project Frank established a safety culture that embraced this value by incorporating outstanding crew involvement self accountability and pride.”
Superintendent of the Year: Ed Kittle Kiewit Infrastructures West Co.
To say the Ed Kittle is a safety expert is an understatement. Ed is OSHA 500 certified and takes courses annually in construction safety standards safety plan training crane safety and explosives. On Kiewit projects he is responsible for day-to-day management meeting project budgets and schedules and leading crews to produce quality work safely.
Ed’s performance at Kiewit’s SR 519 project exemplifies the high performance levels he has sustained. The project completed without a single pedestrian accident or third-party claim. This was a major achievement as the project involved 185779 man hours supervised over 18 months in a highly urban environment that saw up to 67000 spectators for public events 50 trains per day and hundreds of daily commuter pedestrians.
On SR 519 Ed also served as the point of contact between Kiewit and key project stakeholders. His knowledge of the work and his ability to communicate and to understand the needs of each organization were specifically praised in letters from WSDOT Seattle DOT and the Seattle Mariners following project completion.
